MORE than 120 local people with learning disabilities gathered for a special ‘Carnival of Celebration’ on Monday (September 18th).

The event – which took place at Ettington Community Centre – was organised by Heart of England Mencap, welcoming its customers from all over Warwickshire and Worcestershire.

It was the biggest gathering ever hosted by the charity, which has multiple services to support people with learning disabilities, across Stratford, Shipston, Leamington, Southam, Warwick, Studley, Evesham and Malvern.

The carnival ran all day, with plenty of fun and games both indoors and out. There was a disco, live music, Escape Arts workshops, punch and judy show and jester, as well as giant inflatables and outdoor games, from the coconut shy to the tin can alley. A buffet and luxury ice creams were also served up.

The carnival was funded by money raised back in 2015 at Heart of England Mencap’s Hollywood Ball.

Helena Wallis, Chief Executive of Heart of England Mencap, said: “It was a really great day thoroughly enjoyed by everyone, customers and staff as well. We had an idea for a new annual celebration of our charity and all those who make it what is is, and our carnival was the result of that. It was a brilliant chance to bring a huge number of our customers from many different services in many different places together, to have some good old fashioned fun. We look forward to doing it again next year!”

Family disco to raise funds

FAMILIES are being urged to get into the groove and raise money for two local causes supporting those with learning disabilities.

A Family Fun Disco is being held at Shottery Memorial Hall on Saturday June 4th to raise funds for Heart of England Mencap and the Welcombe Hills School.

Organised by the Friends of Heart of England Mencap – the disco runs from 7pm to 9.30pm.

Tickets cost £5 – with carers going free.

The Friends of Heart of England Mencap formed at the start of 2014, chaired by Stratford mum Karen Rousell, whose daughter Lottie was born with learning disabilities.

Karen said: “Our group is all about putting the fun back into fundraising. We want families to come along for a really good time, raising money and awareness along the way to support two local causes doing such important work to improve the lives of those with learning disabilities.”

Tickets are available in advance on 01789 298709, 07817 641248 or kaz.rousell@ntlworld.com
